Great Britain went into the final round of the showjumping 0.2 ahead of New Zealand in the race for silver and Tina Cook went clear on Miners Frolic with just one time fault to seal the medal. Michael Jung, celebrating his 30th birthday, saw Germany home to team gold with a brilliant double clear round - in a combined team score of 133.70.

Zara Phillips hit a fence early on High Kingdom and also incurred a time fault, but her score of 53.10 combined with a brilliant clear from Mary King on Imperial Cavalier and Cook's anchoring display saw GB onto the podium with a score of 138.20 - ahead of New Zealand on 144.40.

"I was just trying to focus on jumping a clear round," Cook said. "We had done so well and it was so close, it could have been silver or nothing, and that would have been awful. Gold would have been brilliant but silver is fantastic."

Miners Frolic suffered a life-threatening illness last year and Cook was full of praise for her team. She said: "What can I say? The vets that kept him alive, the team at home, we got him here. It's been stressful but when it comes to this and the crowd, it's unbelievable."

The team jumping round doubles as the first of two jumping rounds which decide the individual medals. King, Cook and Phillips were among the top 25 to qualify for the individual finale. King started the final round in third place on 42.10 with Cook fourth on 43.00. Sweden's Sara Algotsson Ostholt led on 39.30.

Phillips was first of the British trio to go, producing a clear round for an overall score of 53.10 - good enough for 8th place - to prompt raucous cheers from the home support. Cook could not match her compatriot, however, picking up an early eight-point penalty for a score of 51.00 and sixth. King was last to go, but she also failed to go clean to end on 50.10 in fifth. The competition was won by Germany's Jung with a score of 40.60.

Elsewhere, in the women's hockey competition, Great Britain picked up a thrilling 5-3 victory over South Korea to bolster their medal hopes. Nicola White opened the scoring when, after tricking her way past two players, her shot was allowed to sneak under the goalkeeper for a soft breakthrough. Crista Cullen then made it 2-1 at half-time from a penalty corner after South Korea had earlier levelled.

Britain made it 3-1 not long after the interval when Alex Danson bravely diverted another Cullen strike past the keeper, but they were then pegged back to 3-3. However, two goals in as many minutes from Georgie Twigg and Chloe Rogers wrapped up the win for GB.

Great Britain finished a respectable sixth in the women's gymnastics team event. In a strong field, Britain were up against it early on after a weak start on beam, and a score of 170.495 was only good enough for sixth place. United States (183.596) held off Russia (178.530) to grab gold with Romania (176.414) claiming bronze.

Great Britain suffered their second consecutive defeat in the men's basketball, going down 67-62 to Brazil. Losing to Russia on their first Olympic appearance since 1948 meant they needed a win over Brazil to enhance their chances of progressing from Group B. However, after a bright start, Brazil fought back to draw level at 27-27 by half-time before excelling in the latter stages to force the victory.
