Brit Ogogo stuns No. 1 seed at Games

Britain's Anthony Ogogo remains on course to emulate James DeGale by securing middleweight gold at the Olympics, having stunned No. 1 seed Ievgen Khytrov in the last 16.

Ogogo, who was not considered one of the more likely medal candidates in the squad before the Games, was a huge outsider against Khytrov, the world champion.

The final score was level at 18 each, which led to the scores of all five judges being added up - and that came back at 52 apiece. The judges then plumped for Ogogo when asked to decide who won.

Ogogo let his emotions pour out, sinking to his knees before racing around the ring pumping his fists. He has progressed despite his mother being seriously ill in hospital, having suffered a brain haemorrhage a few weeks ago.

"This is my time. It was such a tough fight. The bad luck I've had with the draw and the disruptions before, I was due a bit of luck," Ogogo said. "I have been on the other end so many times, I deserve that. I will sleep like a baby tonight."

The Brit led after two rounds, but still came out all guns blazing at the start of the third, going toe-to-toe and letting his hands go. It seemed to unsettle Khytrov at first - however, the Ukrainian was on top for the final two minutes, pinning a tiring Ogogo against the ropes.

Nonetheless, with the first two rounds in his favour, he had done enough to triumph - and will be fancied to repeat the heroics of DeGale, who is now the European super-middleweight champion in the professional ranks.

Elsewhere, there was defeat for Scottish lightweight Josh Taylor, who became the first Brit to be eliminated when he lost 15-10 to Italy's Domenico Valentino.
