Team GB missed the chance to qualify for the semi-finals of the women's hockey tournament after they were beaten 2-1 by China in their penultimate group match.

Needing just a point to secure their place in the last four after winning their opening three matches, the hosts were sunk by two quick goals from Fu Baorong and Zhao Yudiao.

Boosted by the return of captain Kate Walsh, who was wearing a protective mask after breaking her jaw against Japan last week, Team GB were unable to grab the all-important point after a late goal from Crista Cullen.

They will have a second chance to qualify when they face defending champions Netherlands on Monday.

Meanwhile, British sailors Paul Goodison and Alison Young both saw their London 2012 medal hopes end on Saturday.

After Ben Ainslie's successful day on the water on Friday, defending Laser champion Goodison finished ninth and eighth in Saturday's races to sit sixth overall with no chance of finishing on the podium after Monday's medal race.

Meanwhile Young, who made a promising start in the women's Laser competition to sit in bronze medal position at the halfway stage, saw her hopes of a top-three finish end on Saturday when she was black-flagged in the penultimate race.

Boxer Tom Stalker held his nerve to beat India's Manoj Kumar 20-16 to reach the quarter-finals of the welterweight competition at ExCeL Arena. Stalker, Team GB's boxing captain, started well as he took the opening two rounds, was forced to hold on as the Indian fought back to take the third round.
