Makhloufi was hugely impressive in winning his 1500m semi-final, but he will not take his place in the final after being slung out by officials on Monday for his run in the 800m.

The Algerian was forced to run in his 800 heat after his federation failed to withdraw him prior to Sunday's deadline. With the 1500 in mind, Makhloufi set off at the back of the pack and barely raised a leg before pulling off the track 100m into the race.

Officials took a dim view of his actions and he was thrown out, with the IAAF saying: "The referee considered that he had not provided a bona fide effort and decided to exclude him from participation in all further events in the competition."

The door has been left ajar for Makhloufi to take his place in Tuesday's 1500m final as the IAAF said he could be reinstated if he can produce a medical certificate explaining why he performed so badly in the 800m.
