Twelve years after breaking his neck, Nick Skelton led Britain to their first jumping medal since 1984.

A jump-off was needed to determine the gold medallists after Britain and Netherlands finished level with eight penalty points each.

Skelton, who had not knocked a fence down in three days of competition, set the tone with a flawless round to put the pressure on the Dutch.

Ben Maher followed suit, and although Scott Brash made one mistake, it did not matter as Maikel van der Vleuten crashed into two fences as the momentum swung firmly in the hosts' favour.

And when Marc Houtzager knocked over a fence, the crowd at Greenwich Park erupted as Britain secured victory with one rider to spare.

Saudi Arabia took the bronze medal with a score of 14 faults, while defending Olympic champions USA finished in a tie for sixth.

Meanwhile, Team GB women's hockey are through to the semi-finals following Japan's 1-0 win over China. However, the hosts were unable to secure top spot in Group A after they were defeated 2-1 by Netherlands later on Monday. Crista Cullen's goal put Team GB ahead, but goals from Naomi van As and Kitty van Male ensured the defending champions progress as group winners and will face New Zealand in the last four.

GB will face Argentina in the semi-finals after a 0-0 draw with Australia was enough to seal top spot in Group B at the expense of the Hockeyroos.

Britain's men's basketball team secured their first win of London 2012 with an emphatic 90-58 demolition of China. Kieron Achara scored 16 points as the hosts signed off with a win. After the match, Chris Finch confirmed he would be leaving his role as head coach after seven years in the post.
