Turner came into the Olympics with doubts about his ability to find his best form, but he shrugged off the concerns with a polished 13.42 seconds to take Heat 6. It was a notable effort from the Brit, given the drama at the first hurdle as Liu crashed out.

Liu, who also suffered injury heartbreak four years ago, flashed out of the blocks but did not get any height at the first hurdle and crashed out. It looked as if his Achilles gave way as he hopped off the track on one leg.

Turner was joined in the semi-finals by Lawrence Clarke who came second in his heat behind Jason Richardson, while Dayron Robles eased through and the fastest time went to Aries Merritt (13.07).

There was disappointment in the javelin qualifying as GB's Goldie Sayers failed to shrug off her elbow complaint and bowed out with three no-throws.
