Nick Skelton's bid for a second Olympic gold ended in disappointment, as he had a fence down in the second run which denied him a shot at victory in the individual jumping at Greenwich Park.

Skelton - who won hold in the team event - and his mount Big Star went clear in the first round and they were on course for a second clear, which would have put them in a jump off, but they clipped the bar on the third fence from the finish which forced him to settle for a share of fifth.

It has been a stellar equestrian event for Britain, with gold in the team jumping and team dressage and silver in the evening team.

Skelton and Scott Brash were two of just six riders to go clear in the first round, raising hopes of a GB medal but they both faltered on the second run.

The gold went to Swiss rider Steve Guerdat aboard Nino Des Buissonnets who were the only rider-horse combination to post a double clear round.
