It has historically been a good event for GB and the quartet of Nigel Levine, Conrad Williams, Jack Greene and Martyn Rooney came home second in their heat in a time of 3:00.38.

Levine had the baton for the opening leg and it was not the brightest start, as he went off slowly and was well back before driving hard down the home leg. Williams took over in fifth but stormed round the home leg to take advantage of the stagger and he handed over Greene.

Greene came into the race as the least well-known of the four, but he will be in the mind of 80,000 people at the Olympic Stadium after running the 400m of his life. He stayed strong for 300 metres before powering down the home straight to hand Rooney a cushion to work with.

Rooney was able to coast home and the only disappointment was that he eased off and was beaten for first by Trinidad & Tobago.

Things will be tougher in the final, as was highlighted by the second heat as Bahamas and USA pulled miles clear of the rest of the field to qualify - with both posting times of 2:58.87. There will be no Jamaica in the final as they failed to finish.
