Tom Daley survived a scare as he qualified for the semi-final of the men's 10m platform at London 2012.

Daley remained on course for his first Olympic medal after qualifying in 15th place, but his place in the next round was placed in some doubt after a disastrous fifth dive.

It was a nervy start from one of the poster boys of the London Games, and the pressure appeared to show as Daley scored just 73.800 on his opening dive to leave him in 17th position.

He began to settle into his rhythm with scores of 78.40, 89.25 and 83.25, but failure to execute his back three-and-a-half somersault saw him score just 39.60 on his fifth dive as he slumped down the leaderboard.

Facing a premature exit from the competition, Daley pulled out a score of 84.15 to secure his progress, but he knows he will need to perform better on Saturday if he is to challenge for a medal.

China's Qiu Bo is the favourite to win gold after qualifying in pole position with a lofty score of 563.70, while defending champion Matt Mitcham was ninth. Daley's synchronised partner Pete Waterfield failed to qualify.
