Gold

The definitive chapter was written in Mo Farah's remarkable story as he doubled up on Saturday, adding 5000 metres gold to the 10,000m triumph he secured one week previously.

Farah produced a simply stunning final 600m, somehow managing to run flat out for the duration, to ensure his name will echo through history as one of the greatest ever British athletes. He is only the seventh man to win the 5000m and 10,000m at the same Games.

His eldest brother and mother, based in the Somaliland region, had to walk four miles to the nearest village with electricity in order to watch Farah compete in the 5000m, and they will have watched him simply refuse to be beaten, his face contorting with pain in the final strides - but his legs never drifting away from top gear.

Silver

The world-record breaking Jamaican 4x100m relay team can think themselves a little unlucky to miss out - we're sure they'll get over it in time - but it's got to be the breathless drama of the men's 10m platform diving, featuring GB's own Tom Daley, that finishes runner-up to Farah.

Daley led the field after the penultimate round of diving, but there were just 0.15 points separating the top three competitors, which set up a captivating finale. Daley, whose last dive carried less difficulty than his rivals', ended up falling just short, taking bronze, while David Boudia of the USA took gold ahead of world champion Qiu Bo of China. Outstanding drama.

Bronze

The script seemed to have been written: Brazil attacker Oscar, in his new home city after a move to Chelsea, had the chance to equalise from six yards in injury-time of the Olympic final, in the process announcing himself to London as the man for the big occasion. But somehow, totally on his own within spitting distance of the goal, he managed to head the ball over the top - well over the top, in fact - and Mexico were the Olympic champions, leaving Brazil still waiting for a first Games gold in football. They don't give out Oscars for that.
