Russian athletes are set for a hefty £75,000 windfall if they win gold medals on home soil at the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

Silver medallists will also be awarded £47,000 with bronze medallists picking up £28,000, the Russian government have announced.

Russia recorded their worst ever Winter Games medal haul in Vancouver four years ago, taking 15 overall and finishing 11th in the table.

President Vladimir Putin is directly involved in overseeing preparations for the Games.
