Sochi 'most secure venue on planet'
The Sochi Winter Olympics will be "the most secure venue on the planet", according to the Games' chief organiser.
Amid threats of terrorist attacks from Muslim insurgents from the Caucasus region, Russia has been mounting a monumental security operation for the Olympics, with more than 50,000 police and soldiers being deployed.
But Dmitry Chernyshenko, head of the local organising committee, said on Wednesday that Sochi will deliver "the most security friendly games", and that the increased measures won't detract from the atmosphere for athletes and spectators.
"The Olympics is a global event and the security is also a global multi-national event and state authorities are doing their utmost," said Chernyshenko.
Chernyshenko was also positive that "history will be made" with Russia's first Winter Olympics, nine days out from the Opening Ceremony.
