Rees joined Wasps' academy side from the Royal Grammar School at High Wycombe, before signing his first professional contract with the club in 2004. His impact in the side was instant, as he made 11 appearances for the first team and secured the Man of the Match award against Leeds.
The following season began equally brightly, with Rees picking up the Man of the Match award against Leicester at the start of the season. Injury ensured that his second season was a fragmented affair, with two months separating his first and second appearances for Wasps. The 2006-07 season proved far more successful for Rees, with 25 appearances and a Heineken Cup winner's medal to his name.
The season also saw Rees make his bow for the full England team, having represented them at all age groups and captained the U21s. His first appearance came as a replacement against Scotland in the Six Nations and his first start against France saw him collect another Man of the Match award.
His development continued apace, and he was granted a spot in Brian Ashton's squad for the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Rees started the first group game against the USA, scoring a second half try to put the game beyond the Eagles.
Despite England's stuttering performance Rees was singled out as having played well, and he retained his place for the 36-0 drubbing at the hands of South Africa. A thigh injury ruled Rees out of the Samoa and Tonga pool matches, and he failed to regain his place in the squad following the return of Lewis Moody to the England openside.
Rees again felt the disappointing sting of injury during the 2008 Six Nations, when coming on as a replacement against Wales he lasted only 25 minutes before succumbing to injury. He missed England's remaining fixtures in the tournament, but returned to Wasps and helped them to another Premiership title, scoring the opening try in the final against Leicester.
The 2008 England summer tour to New Zealand provided further opportunity for Rees as he excelled in the two Tests, holding his own against the mercurial Richie McCaw. He retained his place for that year's autumn international clashes but was ruled out of the 2009 Six Nations with a knee injury.
Rees was handed the Wasps captaincy on a permanent basis on the eve of the 2009-10 campaign but his injury woes would soon return to haunt him. A shoulder injury would sideline him for the majority of the season but battled back to fitness and started the following campaign strongly. However, in December 2010 it was announced that Rees would undergo further reconstruction on his shoulder that would rule him out for the rest of that season.
There was yet more injury woe for Rees ahead of the 2011-12 season when he suffered a knee ligament injury in a pre-season game against Agen that ruled him out of action for 6-9 months. And despite claiming at times that he was nearing a return to action, Rees announced his retirement from the game in March 2012.
