Profile

Van der Schyff made his Test debut in 1949, starting four Tests against the All Blacks as the Springboks ran amok to seal a series whitewash. While the fullback performed adequately he was overlooked for Test honours for the next six seasons. After landing the winning drop-goal for Western Transvaal in their victory over the Lions in the first match of their 1955 tour, van der Schyff was handed an international lifeline in the first Test. He had the chance, with the final kick of the game, to win it with a conversion to Theuns Briers' try, but missed the target. The Lions won 23-22 and van der Schyff's Test career was over.
