A former Ireland and British & Irish Lions captain, Tom Kiernan set new records for caps, points and captaincy for his country once he retired.
At fullback he played 54 Tests for Ireland in 13 seasons as well going on two Lions tours, once as captain in 1968. When Kiernan captained the Lions side he led by example and scored 35 points in the Tests but ultimately in a losing cause.
Kiernan was also the Munster coach in 1978 when the province famously beat the all conquering All Blacks. His nephew, Mike Kiernan, also toured with the Lions in 1983.
