New Zealand made it twos wins from two at the Rugby World Cup with an 83-7 demolition of Japan in Hamilton. Richard Kahui and Sonny Bill Williams, who wowed the crowd with some typically wonderful handling, both dotted twice for the All Blacks, who had kicked off their campaign by routing Tonga the week before.

2000
Jeremy Guscott found he had overdone it celebrating Bath's 19-12 win over Newcastle and ended up spending the night in police cells after being found drunk in a gutter. When asked to comment by the Daily Star Guscott denied he was drunk and incapable and claimed: "It wasn't me."

2007
Tonga shocked Samoa with a 19-15 win in the "Battle of the Islands" at the 2007 Rugby World Cup. Played at Montpellier, Epi Taione crossed for the only try of a match littered with indiscipline as Pierre Hola added four penalties and a conversion. Samoa's Gavin Williams kicked five penalties as his side failed to overcome an inspired Tonga. The Tongans had Taione and prop Toma Toke sin-binned and flanker Hale T-Pole sent off late on for headbutting.

1924
The British and Irish Lions defeated South Districts 12-6 at Oudtshoorn in a match that came at the end of a long and hard tour of South Africa. On the tour where they earned their nickname, the Lions were so injury ravaged by the time they faced South Districts that flanker Tom Voyce had to be deployed on the wing for the game and the brilliant Englishman showed his versatility by crossing twice for tries.

1972
In the first match ever to be broadcast live on New Zealand television, the All Blacks decimated Australia at Eden Park running out 38-3 winners. The loss was Australia's 100th Test defeat.

1905
The first All Blacks to tour Britain won their inaugural tour game 55-4 against the highly-rated Devon county side. The scoreline was so unexpected that some newspapers reported it as 5-4 assuming the reporters at the match had made a mistake.

2000
Ron and Kahu Tamatea became only the second father and son to appear in the same match in first-class rugby history, featuring in the Poverty Bay v East Coast clash in the NPC.
