Rob Andrew returned an immaculate 12 out of 12 kicks (worth 30 points) to equal Didier Cambcrabcro's world record in a 60-19 win by England against Canada at Twickenham. "It was phenomenal," shrugged Canada's coach Ian Birtwell. "Andrew never looked like missing and when that happens you are always up against it."

1935
Oxford and Cambridge drew the 60th Varsity Match 0-0 - the last scoreless match of the series to date and the third in all after 1876 and 1892. The reporters seemed to watching quite different matches. While the Daily Express said it was "an entertaining game in which both sides threw everything into attack leaving the 40,000 crowd enthralled", the Daily Mirror spoke of it being "one of the most disappointing in the whole of the long series".

2005
Jonah Lomu returned to rugby by playing 60 minutes of Cardiff Blues' 25-10 Heineken Cup victory away to Calvisano. The All Blacks legend played his first game for over two years after undergoing kidney surgery. "It was just great to be out there again," he said. "I am just glad to have come through the 60 minutes without any injuries. I was fine the night before the game, but I did get a bit nervous five minutes before kick-off. It was like running out for my first game all over again - in fact, that's exactly what it was after 28 months since my last competitive match."

2004
Perth was awarded the fourth Australian Super 14 franchise, beating competition from Melbourne and Victoria. The franchise eventually became the Western Force. "This is an historic day for Rugby in Australia. The Board is unanimous in its view that a Super 14 team based in Perth will be an enormous success and will make an enduring contribution to Australian Rugby," gushed ARU chairman Bob Tuckey.

1988
Jonathan Davies played his last game for Wales before switching codes. He led his country to their first home defeat (15-9) by Romania, for whom his opposite number Gelu Ignat played a key role.

2011
England opened their 2011 Rugby World Cup campaign with a hard-fought 13-9 victory over Argentina in Dunedin, scrum-half Ben Youngs proving the match-winner for Martin Johnson's men with his second-half try.

2003
Jonny Wilkinson collected an MBE from the Queen following his exploits in kicking England to World Cup glory. The fly-half returned to Buckingham Palace for the second time in a week following a reception for the players and coaching staff.

1946
The most talked-about Varsity match for years - the first after the war - attracted a then record attendance of 40,000 who saw Oxford win 15-5 at Twickenham in glorious winter sunshine. In a sign of what the future held, only two of the Oxford side were English - one of them being 35-year-old RAF hooker Clarence Gilthorpe.

1957
Peter Robbins captained Oxford to a 3-0 victory in the Varsity match. The Duke of Edinburgh was among a crowd of 55,000 at Twickenham. The score disguised the fact that Oxford dominated throughout and spent most of the match camped in the Cambridge half.

1966
Mike Gibson and Roger Young, the halfbacks, steered Ulster to a draw against the Wallabies at Ravenhill. Had Brian Marshall succeeded with either of his conversions, the Irishmen would have achieved a deserved victory.
