1998
England rattled up a then Five Nations highest score, beating Wales 60-26 at Twickenham in a match that marked Phil Vickery's Test debut. Wing David Rees scored two tries while flanker Neil Back, scrum-half Kyran Bracken, flanker Lawrence Dallaglio, replacement Matt Dawson, centre Will Greenwood and wing Austin Healey all breached the shoddy Welsh defence.

1987
Two glorious second-half tries carried France to a 19-15 win against England at Twickenham. Wing Eric Bonneval and the incomparable Philippe Sella breached the English defence, with fullback Serge Blanco and fly-half Franck Mesnel slotting drop-goals. Bonneval profited from some wonderful handling in midfield between Sella and Denis Charvet, while Sella picked off a loose England pass and danced home through the cover defence. France went on to secure the Grand Slam in the year of the inaugural Rugby World Cup, which they lost in the final to hosts New Zealand.

1948
France won 11-3 at Swansea to register their first Test win on Welsh soil. With 38,000 fans packed into St.Helen's, France powered to victory with tries from skipper Guy Basquet, wing Michel Pomathios and outside-centre Maurice Terreau.

1955When Harry Scott was summoned to the manager's office at the Manchester Engineering Works he assumed he had done something wrong - but it was to be told his boss had just taken a call to tell him that he had been drafted into the England XV for the weekend's match against France after Nigel Gibbs pulled out. One of the smallest fullbacks to play for England - he was 5'6" tall - it was to be his only cap.

1976
Wales beat Ireland in Dublin - their first win in the Irish capital for 12 years - to secure the Triple Crown. Tight security surrounded the match after a number of Welsh players receive death threats. Gareth Edwards, Gerald Davies and Phil Bennett scored the Welsh tries in a 34-9 victory.

1981
A brilliant late Huw Davies try capped a fine 23-17 win for England in the Calcutta Cup match at Twickenham. The debutant fly-half was one of three to cross the Scottish line, with Mike Slemen and Clive Woodward also scoring.

1931
In a typically hard Newport-Cardiff clash at Rodney Parade Hubert Day (Newport) and Tom Williams (Cardiff) were sent off for foul play at a line-out. The dismissal cost Day his place in the Welsh XV selected to play against France the following week.

1996
John Devereux became the first player to hold Union and League professional contracts. He was to play for Sale in the winter and Widnes (Rugby League) in the summer.
