Ireland's tour of New Zealand and Australia has become yet more taxing following injuries to wing Shane Horgan, hooker Jerry Flannery and centre Fergus McFadden.

The trio came off second best in a bruising loss to the Barbarians at Thomond Park on Friday night, with Ireland boss Declan Kidney confirming that Horgan will not travel after pulling out of the starting line-up with a stomach bug. The Leinster man was hospitalised as a result and was replaced by Leicester's Johne Murphy in Limerick, although his coach did not rule out the possibility of him joining up with the squad at a later date.

McFadden suffered a broken jaw and will need a six to eight week rehab period, leaving Ireland with a headache prior to next weekend's meeting with the All Blacks in New Plymouth.

"We have Fergus McFadden who took a crack on the jaw," he said. "Johne Murphy came in today when Shane pulled out, so we have cover in Johne. Jerry Flannery went down and aggravated his calf a little bit."

Ireland's plans have already been rocked by the withdrawal of lock Paul O'Connell, centre Keith Earls and hooker Rory Best. Flannery will remain in Ireland to be monitored, with Damien Varley travelling with the squad.

"We had Damien Varley at training during the week, he was keeping an eye on things," Kidney said. "You can't cover every eventuality, but I think we have cover with a fair few of them already.

"If it looks like Jerry can't travel, we will get Damien on the flight and bring him over with us. We have Sean [Cronin] and John Fogarty with us as well. Numbers will stay about the same - we don't expect having to bring more than the 34 or 35 just yet."
