Former England prop Phil Vickery has made the first strides in a possible coaching career by becoming a coaching consultant to National One side Cinderford.

The 35-year-old Rugby World Cup winner retired on medical advice in October 2010, with 73 England caps and 119 Premiership appearances - for Gloucester and Wasps - to his name.

Vickery will work alongside former Gloucester prop Andy Deacon - the club's director of rugby - and will be on deck for this weekend's game against Birmingham and Solihull. Cinderford are currently 13th in the league.

"I am really looking forward to the challenge at Cinderford and being part of a professional, proper rugby club," he said. "I have been out of the game for over a year now and this role gives me a chance to get back into rugby, which I love.

"I plan to help the guys develop even further, drawing on my experiences and knowledge, and provide that extra resource in training to make a difference, plus it will give me a chance to learn so much about the coaching side of the game. A win-win for both of us really. National One is a high level of rugby and a very competitive national division so something to get my teeth into and be involved in this great sport."
