Varndell injury adds to Wasps' woes

London Wasps' woes are showing no signs of abating with the news that winger Tom Varndell faces 12 weeks on the sidelines.

The former Leicester Tigers flyer will have to undergo surgery on a foot injury which means he joins a long list of players unavailable for selection. Varndell suffered an ankle injury at a similar stage of the season last term which required him to sit out 12 weeks of action.

Wasps are struggling in the Premiership in 11th place but are on the verge of the quarter-finals in the Amlin Challenge Cup following their bonus point win over Rovigo at the weekend but the news of Varndell's injury will come as a huge blow to Dai Young's men.

Fellow winger Christian Wade has recently been ruled out for three months while fellow back Chris Bell is also a long-term absentee with fly-half Nick Robinson also missing in recent times. And it is the forwards where they have been arguably hit hardest. Tom Rees, John Hart, Joe Launchbury, James Cannon and Ross Filipo are all out injured with Ed O'Donoghue also struggling with a knock. And this season has already seen three of Wasps more experienced players - Joe Worsley, Steve Thompson and Dan Ward-Smith, hanging up their boots.

Wasps have bolstered their ranks with the signing of two Namibians in recent times - Heinz Koll and Tinus du Plessis - but it remains to be seen whether they will look to bring in more short-term cover like Gloucester did last week with their signing of Ollie Phillips.
