South Africa captain Jean de Villiers has suffered yet another major injury, dislocating his kneecap in the Springboks' 12-6 loss to Wales at Millennium Stadium on Saturday night.

De Villiers was taken from the field just before the hour mark not long after Wales fullback Leigh Halfpenny had kicked his fourth penalty and given the hosts a six-point lead. The veteran centre looked to fall awkwardly after forming part of a maul following a tackle on Wales No.8 Toby Faletau.

"The scans revealed significant ligament damage to the inside of his knee and the supporting muscles," said Springbok team doctor Craig Roberts. "Jean will return to South Africa and see an orthopaedic specialist in Cape Town early in the week. He has had previous surgery on this knee and the further management of the injury is dependent upon the specialist's recommendations."

Springboks coach Heyneke Meyer's attention immediatedly turned to his skipper's wellbeing post-game.

"Losing our captain was a big setback," South Africa coach Heyneke Meyer said on the BBC. "Jean has had so many knee injuries. Victor Matfield's a great leader. But I feel really sorry for Jean. I hope he will be back for the World Cup."
