Jason Robinson: Relished the few opportunities he had to attack, and his 50th cap now beckons against New Zealand or France next Saturday. 7

Paul Sackey: Caused a real threat to the Wallabies defence when England gave him the ball. Strong performance. 7

Mathew Tait: Grew into the game as it developed, leaving a feeling the best is still to come. 6

Mike Catt: Answered an SOS to replace the injured Andy Farrell, and he belied his 36 years with an impressive contribution. 7

Josh Lewsey: Like Sackey, he had few opportunities to shine, but did not put a foot wrong. 7

Jonny Wilkinson: Missed three kicks at goal but his 12-point haul took England through and he became the World Cup's all-time top scorer. 7

Andy Gomarsall: A typically all-action display by the England scrum-half, who marshalled his forwards superbly. 7

Andrew Sheridan: A magnificent show of destruction by the mighty Sale Sharks scrummager. He ground Australia into the dust. 9

Mark Regan: Stayed in Australia's faces throughout the opening 50 minutes. His commitment was staggering. 8

Phil Vickery: Not far behind Sheridan in the way he dealt with Australia's scrum. Powerful and unrelenting. 8

Simon Shaw: Arguably England's best forward of the World Cup, he delivered another display that had `world class' stamped all over it. 9

Ben Kay: Helped ensure England enjoyed a perfect 11 from 11 lineout takes on their ball. Another consistent effort. 7

Martin Corry: Typically warrior-like in everything he did. England, as ever, could not afford to be without him. 7

Lewis Moody: Led England out on the occasion of his 50th cap and he did not stop running until he departed on 66 minutes. 7

Nick Easter: The Harlequins number eight produced his best performance for England. Always in the thick of it. 8

Replacements

George Chuter: Replaced Regan after 52 minutes and England did not lose momentum. 7

Matt Stevens: Took over from Vickery on 59 minutes. England's scrum did not suffer. 7

Toby Flood: Replaced Catt at inside centre in the 64th minute. His first slice of World Cup action. 6

Joe Worsley: Breathed a huge sigh of relief after conceding a late penalty that Wallabies skipper Stirling Mortlock missed. 6

Lawrence Dallaglio: Made his entry 11 minutes from time as England successfully closed out the game. 6

Chris Latham: Had too few opportunities to attack England but was heavily involved in setting up Australia's try. 7

Adam Ashley-Cooper: Rarely seen in the contest. Spent most of the game watching England's forwards take charge. 5

Stirling Mortlock: The Wallabies skipper missed three penalties, including one during the closing seconds that might have snatched victory. 6

Matt Giteau: Arguably Australia's most gifted footballer, yet he could do next to nothing without the ball. 6

Lote Tuqiri: Took his try well, yet Australia rarely got him moving in dangerous positions. 7

Berrick Barnes: Has a great future ahead of him, but he discovered rugby is such a tougher game when played on the back foot. 5

George Gregan: A sad way for the veteran Wallabies scrum-half to bow out of Test rugby. Not his day. 6

Matt Dunning: All his nightmares of Twickenham two years ago returned as England's scrum left him floundering again. 4

Stephen Moore: Outplayed by opposite number Mark Regan and at one stage put his side in deep trouble with a badly miscued kick for touch. 4

Guy Shepherdson: He will see Andrew Sheridan in recurring nightmares for the rest of his rugby career. Blitzed. 4

Nathan Sharpe: Found it tough going opposite the in-form Simon Shaw and could make little impact. 5

Dan Vickerman: Lacked discipline at key times in the contest. No match for England's second-row pairing. 4

Rocky Elsom: Relished the close-quarter physical combat but ultimately came off second-best. 6

George Smith: Had a rare old tussle with Moody in the scrap for possession on the floor, yet it was England's day. 6

Wycliff Palu: Prominent early on but faded as England built their victory platform. 5

Replacements:

Phil Waugh: Took over from Smith after 64 minutes but he could not sway the contest. 5

Al Baxter: Replaced Shepherdson 16 minutes from time yet the damage was already done. 5

Hugh McMeniman: Entered the battle midway through the second period but England were not to be denied. 5

Drew Mitchell: Went on for Adam Ashley-Cooper and perhaps should have started instead of him in the first place. 5

Adam Freier: Replaced Moore seven minutes from time with the battle all but lost. 5

Stephen Hoiles: Replaced Palu in the 76th minute as Australia desperately looked to save the day. 4
