Rugby legends pitch in for charity

A host of former international rugby players will be showcasing their skills at Richmond Athletic Ground on Saturday when England Legends take on Ireland Legends to commemorate the 25th anniversary of children's charity Wooden Spoon.

Kicking off at 10.30am, and just a short distance from Twickenham, the fixture is set to provide an excellent start to the day for fans attending that afternoon's RBS 6 Nations fixture between England and Ireland.

The game promises to be a thrilling encounter, with ex-British and Irish Lions Ben Clarke (England), Mick Galwey and Tyrone Howe (both Ireland) among those taking part. Admission price is £5, with all proceeds going to Wooden Spoon.

The charity, which is heavily supported by British rugby, was born as a direct result of England 'winning' the wooden spoon in 1983, a campaign that culminated in a loss in Dublin.

On their return to London, several disappointed fans were determined to turn that defeat into something more positive and set up Wooden Spoon - deciding that rugby's values of team spirit and camaraderie could be harnessed to support mentally, physically and socially disadvantaged children and young people.

To date, the charity has donated over £13 million to causes throughout the UK and Ireland.
