1989
An embarrassing blunder from the shy and retiring David Campese helped the Lions to a 19-18 win in the third Test at the SCG and with it a series victory. A thrilling game was locked at 9-9 at the break, and early in the second half Campese chose to run the ball from his own dead-ball line after Rob Andrew had missed a drop kick. Ieuan Evans closed him down forcing Campese into a dreadful pass which went behind Greg Martin and Evans dropped on the loose ball for the try. "It's Micky Mouse rugby," lamented the Australian commentator and for once the vocal Campese was silenced. Two penalties by Gavin Hastings gave the Lions a 19-12 cushion which they just held on to.

2000
A world record crowd of 109,874 attended Stadium Australia in Sydney where the All Blacks beat the Wallabies 39-35 in the season's opening Tri-Nations Test. The game was a gripping affair, won in the dying moments of stoppage time by a try down the left wing from Jonah Lomu. After eight minutes the crowd had been stunned into silence by three New Zealand tries which put them 24-0 ahead but the Australians fought back to level 24-24 at the break and they even briefly led early in the second half. Andrew Walker's debut from the bench made him the first man to be capped by the Wallabies after crossing over the League.

1896
In their 22nd match on South African soil since 1891, the Lions were held for the first time in a scoreless draw against Western Province in Cape Town.

1924
The Lions were lucky to record the first win of their South African tour, scraping home 9-8 against a young and resourceful Western Province Universities XV at Newlands.

1971
Uproar in Brisbane after the Queensland premier declared a state of emergency for the forthcoming visit of the Springboks against a backdrop of increasingly fractious protests against their tour. The government had commandeered the local exhibition ground for matches as it was felt to be easier to police but locals objected to the 7ft-high barbed-wire fence erected.

1961
The pocket halves, Guy and Lilian Camberabero who was playing on his 24th birthday, played together for France in the 22-3 defeat by Waikato at Hamilton. Don Clarke landed four penalties and converted the home side's two tries.
