Profile

As sport took a hold on the national consciousness from the 1850s onwards, Kennington Oval was, briefly, at the hub of cricket, rugby union and football. Used for cricket since 1845, the ground staged the first rugby international in 1872, the same season it was home to the first FA Cup final. Two years earlier it had seen the first football international (as with rugby, against Scotland) and in 1880 it became England's first Test cricket ground.

It hosted seven rugby internationals until 1879, with England winning six and drawing one.
