Limerick native Peter Fitzgibbon is an international referee on the up since being added to the IRB elite panel in 2009.

A member of Thomond RFC, the club from which Keith Earls emerged, Fitzgibbon played before taking up refereeing with the Munster Association of Referees (MAR). He graduated through the ranks of Irish club rugby, refereeing in the All Ireland League before graduating through AIB League, Magners League, Heineken Cup rugby and various age-group international levels.

He experienced international rugby at the IRB Junior World Cup, and took charge of full internationals in 2006 when refereeing Portugal v Romania. Fitzgibbon, who is also IRFU Leisure Rugby Referee Development Manager, won Munster referee of the year in 2008 and will take charge of two international fixtures in the 2010 summer schedule as Australia take on Fiji and Fiji take on Tonga.
