Tonga got their Rugby World Cup preparations back on track with a 32-20 victory over Fiji in their warm-up clash in Lautoka.

Fly-half Kurt Morath kicked 17 points courtesy of five penalties and a conversion to avenge his side's 27-12 defeat to the Fijians last weekend but the hosts did just enough to claim the Punjas Series title with a narrow 47-44 aggregate victory.

A try from winger Vungakoto Lilo and the boot of Morath put the visitors in control of the contest in the first half but a penalty from Waisea Luveniyali and a five-pointer from lock Rupeni Nasiga edged Fiji into a 10-8 lead. But Tonga rallied before the break with Morath slotting a penalty after the sin-binning of Fiji's Sisa Koyamaibole.

Tonga extended their lead after the re-start with scores from winger Fetu'u Vainikolo and centre Alipate Fatafehi while Morath turned the screw with three penalties. Fiji looked out of the contest with a Luveniyali penalty the only reward for their second half efforts until lock Leone Nakarawa struck with a crucial score.

The 23-year-old, who has been granted permission to travel to New Zealand for the World Cup after resigning from his army post, powered over in stoppage time for his side's second try that gave them the edge on aggregate with Luveniyali rounding out the scoring with the conversion.
