Northampton Saints have confirmed that fullback Ben Foden will be out of action "for a number of weeks".

Foden was replaced in the 46th minute of their match with Bath on Friday and the sight of him limping from the field immediately sparked fears that he would be out for a lengthy spell of time. And the Saints have confirmed this saying that Foden has "sustained significant damage to his ankle ligaments".

The news will come as a massive blow for both Jim Mallinder's Northampton and Stuart Lancaster's England. Lancaster is likely to be keeping a watchful eye on developments at Franklin's Gardens regarding Foden and the fullback will visit a specialist on Wednesday to determine how long he will be on the sidelines for.

England kick off their November Test schedule with a match against Fiji on November 10 and Lancaster will hope to have the back available. Foden was utilised both on the wing and at fullback against South Africa in the June Tests and if he is unfit for the four-Test series in the autumn then the likes of Harlequins' Mike Brown, Saracens' Alex Goode and Bath's Nick Abendanon are likely to be in the frame for the No.15 shirt.
