Daniel Adongo made his National Football League debut only in December, just four months after first strapping on pads, after signing for Indianapolis Colts in July 2013, but already the Kenyan former Super Rugby player is considered a potential key for the team in their bid to make the Super Bowl in 12 months.

Adongo, 24, played more than a dozen snaps on special teams in that debut - a 42-28 loss to Cincinatti Bengals - showing hints of his rugby instincts in driving blockers to the ground, diving on loose balls and fielding one kick, and subsequently he played against Houston Texans. But that limited game time has the Colts and their coaches considering what Adongo might do next season.

The Kenyan's progress in Indianapolis is a result of his work ethic, with Colts wide receiver Da'Rick Rogers saying he "is one of the first five people in the building and the last five to leave".

Adongo said he "was nervous" on his debut "but I subdued that because I had an obligation to the team and my brothers here to perform whatever task or duty asked of me on the special teams to the greatest of my abilities".

Adongo, who played Super Rugby with the Southern Kings in 2013, making five appearances, after featuring previously for the Sharks and Blue Bulls in South Africa's Currie Cup and Counties Manukau in the ITM Cup in New Zealand, said of his new career: "The toughest adjustment is just being patient. I can't just say 'let me go out there, let me go out there' anymore. I'm looking at a few things I've done, so I am continuing to plant my seeds so I will yield some good fruit."
