France lost to England at Twickenham despite scoring 35 points. Was this a record for them, or indeed anyone? Asked Martin Cleverley

Before that breathless 55-35 match at Twickenham, France had only once before scored 35 points in a rugby union international and lost - they went down 35-43 to Wales in Paris in 2001.

Wales hold the record for the major countries - they lost 44-50 to Argentina in Tucuman in 2004. They also lost 37-53 to New Zealand in Sydney during the 2003 World Cup, and 36-38 to South Africa in Cardiff in 2004.

South Africa lost 39-41 to Australia in Bloemfontein in 2010, and New Zealand went down 40-46 to South Africa in Johannesburg in 2000. Australia, Canada and South Africa have all scored 35 points in an international but lost.

The overall record for all nations is held by Namibia, who lost 54-57 to Madagascar in July 2012.
