USA Eagles Todd Clever have released former captain from their Pacific Nations Cup squad following "multiple" conduct violations.

Chris Wyles replaced Clever as captain for the Eagles' 21-16 defeat by Samoa in San Jose, a game in which the flanker played no part, and USA Rugby confirmed in a short statement published on its website that the 32-year-old had been excluded due to "multiple squad conduct violations".

"Such behaviour is contrary to the team culture that players and management have been fostering within the Eagles over time," coach Mike Tolkin said. "Clearly, this is not a pleasant or desirable circumstance for either party."

Clever has played 63 times for his country, scoring 11 tries, and was a member of the squads at the 2003, 2007 and 2011 World Cups.
