Pichot boost for Bristol
September 27, 2000

Argentine scrum-half Agustin Pichot and Australian-born fly-half Steven Vile have eased Bristol head coach Dean Ryan's worries about selection for the forthcoming European Shield.

The pair will be counted as 'non overseas' players under new tournament regulations whereby "any player who has, immediately preceding the registration date, completed 36 consecutive months of residence in the country of the Union which has jurisdiction over his Club" is given the necessary leeway.

This has allowed Ryan to also include Hong Kong international wing Luke Nabaro and recent signing Felipe Contepomi, the Argentine international fly-half, as the two 'overseas players' in his 30-man squad for the competition.

Last season, under director of rugby Bob Dwyer, Bristol fielded weakened sides in the competition because there was no automatic place in this season's Heineken Cup for the winner as there is from this season.

But Bristol still managed to reach the semi-finals before being beaten by Pau. This season the west country club are in Pool 7 along with Mont de Marsan, La Rochelle, Parma.

Bristol squad: G Archer., G Baber, L Best, G Bowen, A Brown, S Brown, J Brownridge, F Contepomi, D Crompton, L Davies, D Dewdney, S Fenn, K Fullman, L Gerrard, P Johnstone, S Marsden, J Mayer, M McCarrick, N McCarthy, L Nabaro, A Pichot, D Rees, D Ryan, A Sheridan, C Short, E Simoned, B Sturnham, A Vander, S Vile, B Williams.
