Marsden steers Shoguns to tour win
July 23, 2001

Bristol Shoguns won the first game of their three-match pre-season tour to Argentina with a 33-26 victory over national champions Rosario Athletic XV.

England Under-21 star Sean Marsden ran in two tries for the Shoguns, the second on the stroke of full time being created by Argentine international scrum-half Agustin Pichot, while fly-half Shane Drahm, a recent signing from Queensland Reds, kicked 13 points.

Another of the Shoguns' England Under-21 players Philip Christophers marked his debut in the Bristol colours, having joined from Brive, with a second-half try.

Former England flanker Ben Sturnham, playing in the second row, had scored the opener.

Despite fielding what coach Dean Ryan called his ``first choice scrummaging pack'', Bristol were forced to concede three penalty tries.

Scotland No 8 Ross Beattie, a recent signing from Newcastle Falcons, came off the bench to play his first rugby since January, when a neck injury cut short his season.
