Steele slams Paramore
September 1, 2001

Northampton rugby director John Steele on Saturday night launched an outspoken attack on Gloucester forward Junior Paramore following his team's Premiership defeat at Kingsholm.

Steele was incensed by a 73rd-minute high tackle by Paramore on Northampton's former New Zealand All Black Andrew Blowers.

Blowers required treatment on the field and then went off in a dazed state, but referee Tony Spreadbury only brandished a yellow card after discussions with his touch judge.

"Junior Paramore sets himself up as an ambassador for the game, but year after year, his behaviour is disgraceful. We saw that again today," Steele said.

The Northampton boss refused to comment further, but ruled out taking any additional action.

The incident blotted Samoan Paramore's copybook after he scored the only try of a game dominated by goal-kickers Ludovic Mercier and Paul Grayson.

Gloucester fly-half Mercier, making his debut after signing from Aurillac during the summer, kicked 17 points as the West Country club triumphed 22-9.

Grayson slotted three first-half penalties, but Paramore's try proved crucial just before the break and left Northampton with a second half mountain to climb.

"We made a lot of errors," Steele conceded. "We didn't keep the ball for long enough and spent a lot of time defending, but we looked a much better team in the last 20 minutes.

"Maybe we were a little bit tense, but the last quarter of the game is what we will build on going into next Saturday's game against Bath."

For Gloucester, the victory completed a difficult week that started with assistant coach Andy Keast leaving the club.

Keast's departure, just a few months into a two-year contract, came amid speculation of player unrest.

But a Gloucester team containing seven debutantes put all that behind them to run out comfortable winners.

"The problem is now resolved. I didn't see any unhappy guys out on the pitch today, or guys who didn't have a big commitment," said Gloucester rugby director Philippe Saint-Andre.

"It has been a tough week, but for 60 minutes today, I thought that we were absolutely in control of the game."

Paramore later described his tackle on Blowers as "a 50-50 thing".

The Samoan also claimed that it was not intentional, terming it as something that happened "in the heat of the moment".
