Falcons fight back to pip Cheetahs
September 1, 2001

Ettiene Botha ran in two tries either side of the break to spur the Falcons to a 32-26 win over the Free State Cheetahs at the Barnard Stadium in Kempton Park on Saturday, after trailing 23-16 at the break.

Free State's Conrad Barnard and Dawie du Toit of the Falcons slotted three penalties each before visiting prop Daan Human spotted an enormous gap and lumbered through for the opening try of the match.

Shamefully poor defence by the Falcons allowed flank Gerrie Britz to touch down four minutes later and the home side were suddenly down 23-9.

The Falcons snatched a try back on the stroke of halftime when centre Botha split the Cheetahs line.

After exchanging a spate of penalties, the Falcons trailed the Cheetahs 26-25 when Man of the Match Adrian Jacobs tore the Cheetahs defence to shreds. He breezed through the midfield before off-loading to Botha for his second try.

With the Cheetahs' Hendro Scholtz sin-binned shortly afterwards, Botha's try effectively sealed the Section Y win for the Falcons. Du Toit picked up 19 points via five penalties and two conversions.
