Boland back to winning ways
September 1, 2001

Boland wing John Daniels scored four tries as Boland thrashed the Griffons 42-22 in Wellington on Saturday.

Boland's hopes of qualifying for the Top Eight of the Currie Cup was kept alive by this win with a bonus point.

The Griffons just had no answer for the pure speed and finishing ability of Daniels (pictured).

Boland were more comfortable in the slippery conditions and managed to keep the ball in hand through several phases, while the visitors just could not get going.

Inside centre Wayne Julies was again at the heart of every creative move. If Rudi Keil on his outside had a bit more speed, Boland would have wrapped the game up within the first 20 minutes.

They scored their first try in third minute as former Namibian Heino Senekal crashed over after an extended spell off pressure. It was 10-0 a few minutes later as flank Hannes de Kock and Julies combined to create an overlap which flying wing John Daniels exploited, running in from the halfway line without one Griffons player laying a hand on him.

Eric Herbert answered for the Griffons with a penalty, but Boland extended the halftime lead to
15 points through Lean van Dyk, who scored a try and a penalty.

Daniels seemingly sealed the win and a bonus point for the Wellington side with brilliant individual try. After several great phases of build-up, space was created on the right for the diminutive winger. Facing a line of Griffons defenders he chipped over them and jumped above Griffons fullback Gielie de Swardt fielded the ball and crashed over.

Boland missed their fourth successive conversion attempt, but it was enough to give the hosts a 23-3 lead.

But nothing has been easy for Boland this season and they also seemed to think that the match was over. The Griffons scored two tries within five minutes through replacement flyhalf Louis Strydom and wing Malcolm Malan to get within eight points at 23-15 before a fine break by replacement flyhalf Chelton April set up a try for that man Daniels again.

Daniels crossed over five minutes later for his fourth just to rub some salt into Griffons' wounds.
