Sinkinson delighted with return

Brett Sinkinson has spoken of his delight at his international recall for Wales' clash with Romania next week.

Neath flanker Sinkinson is back on the Test match scene - 18 months after the so-called Grannygate scandal that rocked world rugby - having been selected in a 26-man Wales squad for next Wednesday's Millennium Stadium clash against Romania.

New Zealand-born Sinkinson's 14-cap international career came to an abrupt halt in March last year when it was revealed that he had bogus Welsh qualifications.

But he now qualifies for Wales on residency grounds after satisfying the International Rugby Board's three-year criteria.

Sinkinson last appeared in a Wales jersey during the 46-12 Six Nations Championship defeat by England but is favourite to replace injured Cardiff flanker Martyn Williams against Romania.

"It is a great feeling to be back," Sinkinson said. "What happened was regrettable but that has to be put in the background now.

"This is about re-establishing myself as an international player and doing everything possible to help Wales."

Wales manager Alan Phillips added: "Brett is eligible to play and we have picked him on form. I don't feel that we should hold anything against the boy with what has happened in the past."

Although Wales coach Graham Henry has been deprived the services of five injured Lions - Williams, Scott Quinnell, Neil Jenkins, Mark Taylor and Darren Morris - he can still call on six players involved in Australia this summer.

Dafydd James, Scott Gibbs, Rob Howley, Robin McBryde, Colin Charvis and skipper David Young all feature among a group that contains just one uncapped player - 21-year-old Newport back-row forward Alix Popham.

Henry plans to name the starting line-up next Monday.
