Young's Test hopes under threat
September 14, 2001

Wallaby prop Bill Young's hopes of a Test recall is under threat and he doesn't even know why.

Young was one of four Eastwood players cited for dangerous play following the Sydney club rugby union final against University on Saturday.

The Brumbies prop and Eastwood teammates Travis Hall, Jeff Reid and Aaron Broughton-Rouse were charged with dangerous play when University and Waratahs hooker Brendan Cannon was trampled shortly before full-time. Cannon's back was lacerated and jersey shredded during the incident.

Young was enjoying his time back on the field after his international season was disrupted due to a knee injury suffered during the Super 12 final against the Sharks in Canberra.

"The NSW Rugby Union hasn't formally or in any way approached me to tell me I have been cited," Young said. "It's very odd and very disappointing that the media found out about this before me.

"(But) I think that's NSW Rugby. I don't know why but that just seems to be the way they go about things."

If suspended, Young will serve out his punishment during the upcoming tour of Canada and Europe, further delaying his chances of starting a Test.

"After going back over the tape I don't see an incident that I have to answer for. There was no malice in anything I was involved in," Young said. "I have played over 100 first grade games, I have played over 50 Super 12 games, Australian under-21s and representative matches throughout my career and I've never been cited or sent off in a game of football in my life.

"I wouldn't really know how the judiciary system works at all."

The date for the hearing is yet to be finalised.
