Hayes kicks Glasgow to victory
September 15, 2001

Five penalties from Tommy Hayes proved enough for Glasgow as they overcame Llanelli 15-9 in their Celtic League clash at Hughenden.

On a greasy surface Glasgow had most of the possession in the first quarter but their kicks, although putting Llanelli on to the back foot, produced only two Tommy Hayes penalties.

The home defence was having little trouble handling the Llanelli attack but a penalty from the re-start after Hayes' second successful kick saw Wayne Proctor put Llanelli on the board.

Glasgow were turning over Llanelli too frequently for the visitors' comfort but were making little of their possession with Chris Wyatt and Simon Easterby putting in some big hits.

After a Luke Goss line out take-and-drive Glasgow were penalised but Stephen Jones' chance of an equaliser slid past the post.

Glasgow continued to defend any threat with Gordon Simpson and Jon Petrie giving nothing away and stealing opposition ball at vital moments but the game, unsurprisingly in the conditions, remained tight with neither side able to break through.

With the rain sweeping into their faces in the second half, Glasgow found themselves spilling the wet ball and giving Llanelli the opportunity of several dangerous hacks downfield, but Glenn Metcalfe saved on several occasions.

Goss and David Hodges secured Llanelli line out ball inside the Glasgow 22 but the drive was knocked back by a huge Glasgow effort.

Still the pressure was maintained and Stephen Jones' drop goal levelled the scores.

Three minutes later Hayes' third penalty pulled Glasgow ahead and despite a concentrated Llanelli attack with Robin McBryde and Matt Cardey making dents, the Glasgow defence held secure, drove to halfway and won the penalty.

Hayes goaled from the halfway line to give Glasgow a six-point lead but still they were unable to make the game safe and Jones had the chance to close the gap with 15 minutes to go.

His kick skimmed the bar on the way over and Llanelli were back in the hunt and again it was a hack on a Glasgow mistake which almost cost the home side dear, Jon Steel this time the last line of defence.

Glasgow kept play in the Llanelli danger zone, Simpson stole a fractured line out and Glasgow won the penalty for Hayes to goal his fifth of the game.

A Llanelli penalty to the corner was driven back, the same move moments later saw Glasgow pinch the line out but Llanelli kept up the pressure only for their final move to go askew and give Glasgow the win and a quarter-final spot.
