Humphreys delighted with euro record
October 5, 2001

Ulster produced their best performance since winning the Heineken Cup in 1999 with an amazing 42-19 win over Wasps at Ravenhill.

Fly-half David Humphreys laid what surely will be an irresistible claim to the Irish number 10 jersey for next weekend's Six Nations clash with Wales at the Millennium Stadium with an stunning performance as he set a new competition record of 37 points in an extraordinary second half as Ulster overturned a 13-6 interval deficit.

"It hasn't really sunk in it," said Humphreys, who converted his own try and also kicked six penalties and four drop goals - another competition record.

"We knew we had to raise our game to a different level to compete with the English sides and tonight we saw a lot of hard work over the last few months come to fruition.

"It was one of those nights when everything went over but it was never just my night.

"Everyone played very well into a strong wind during the first half and we came out in the second and produced an excellent performance. I was just lucky to be in the right place."

As far as sending a message to Irish coach Warren Gatland ahead of Tuesday's team selection for the game against the Welsh, the Ulster fly half said: "That's not something you think about too much, you just go out and play for Ulster. The better we play then the players involved will have a better chance of making the team."

"David was absolutely exceptional tonight," added Ulster coach Alan Solomons.

"He is a superb player, he read the game well, dictated the play.

"We are still a long way from where we want to be but we are improving."

For Ulster it was two wins out of two and they are now set for a double-header with Stade Francais later this month which is likely to determine the outcome of the group.

Wasps meanwhile, are still pursuing their first points and after just two games, their Heineken Cup challenge is almost certainly at an end.

"It was an incredible display," Wasps lock Ian Jones said of Humphreys' match-winning exploits.

"Their forwards gave David some good ball and he certainly knows how to kick goals.

"There is no doubt that Ulster were the best side tonight and it doesn't make us proud to be the first English team beaten by them.

"We can only try to pick ourselves up now and look forward to the forthcoming matches against Treviso."
