Moody cited by Leinster
January 29, 2002

Leicester's injured England back row Lewis Moody is facing claims that he stamped on Leinster's Brian O'Driscoll during Sunday's Heineken Cup encounter at Welford Road.

Moody, sin-binned late in the game for an unrelated incident, has been cited by Leinster after they studied a video of the 29-18 home win.

Leinster allege that Moody stamped on O'Driscoll's head during the game, which saw the triple English champions advance to the semi-final stage.

If found guilty Moody could face a 12-week ban under current guidelines, certainly ending his Lloyds TSB Six Nations campaign and probably his entire season for club and country.

Ironically, while O'Driscoll is fit to take his place in the Irish side for their Six Nations opener with Wales in Dublin, Moody was forced to pull out of England's squad with a stomach problem yesterday.

The Leicester player has enjoyed an outstanding campaign since opting to stay with the Tigers during the summer.

After earning man-of-the-tour accolades from England coach Clive Woodward after the three-Test trip to North America in June, the 23-year-old flanker agonised over whether to leave Leicester following the arrival of All Black legend Josh Kronfeld.

But his fears of being unable to command a first-team berth have proved unfounded, with Kronfeld often relegated to the bench as Moody forms an all-English Tiger back row with Neil Back and Martin Corry.

His performances have even seen him pressing for a starting place in the England side, although he would almost certainly have had to be content with a place on the bench for Saturday's clash with Scotland.

Meanwhile, European Rugby Cup's disciplinary panel will tomorrow hear misconduct charges against Overmach Parma and L'Aquila in respect of pitch preparations for home games in the Parker Pen Shield.

Both clubs failed to find alternative venues after their round five games were postponed.

Parma are also charged with not fulfilling their round five fixture against Pontypridd after it was rearranged for Gloucester's Kingsholm ground
