Bulls happy with progress

Former Springbok flyhalf Jaco van der Westhuyzen will miss the Bulls' warm-up game against the Renegades at Rustenburg on Wednesday due to the quad injury that also kept him out of the Super 12 region's trial games last Saturday.

However, Bulls assistant coach Mike Bayly was confident the exciting playmaker would be fit for next Friday's warm-up game against the Stormers. Another Springbok, wing Gavin Passens, is still out with a knee injury, but he too should be ready to take on the Stormers.

On Saturday, the Bulls Possibles won their game against the Danie Gerber XV by 27-8, while the Bulls Probables beat the Nico Serfontein XV by 33-10.

Bayly said the coaching staff was fairly happy with the performances of the two teams that played against invitation sides this week. "We've come a long way and we are where we want to be at this stage of the season.

"The big positive is that Johan Roets and Boeta Wessels kicked well in both games and had a success rate of 8/10 between the two of them. We are very happy about that."

Woeful kicking contributed to the Bulls depressing season last year and coach Heyneke Meyer will be hoping that his place kickers can carry their early season form through to the Super 12.

Bt Bayly admitted there was still lots of work to be done. "At times we gelled really nicely, but at times we looked really scrappy. We are still looking for one or two combinations and have not settled on the final side.

"We will be looking at some combinations against the Renegades, but the guys have been training together and everybody knows what is going on."

In an interesting shuffle, Anton Leonard (pictured) is moved back to No 8, with Blue Bulls Currie Cup captain Chris le Roux shifting to flank. Meyer preferred the latter at No 8 during last year's Currie Cup campaign, with Leonard at flank.

Bayly explains: "We are experimenting a bit with our loose-forward combination. Anton had a great game on Saturday and we felt we cannot leave him out of the side. We want to try Chris at No 7 flank, as he also possesses wonderful qualities. We want to use him as openside flanker to play to the ball.

"Anton is a strong runner with the ball, while Chris maybe has better feet and his ball skills is probably a bit better."

Fiery former Springbok hooker James Dalton will get a start at No 2. He captained the Bulls in their last few games in 2001, but was not included in the original Bulls squad this year. However, after a chat with Meyer, Dalton has been recalled to the squad.

"He had a few good runs on Saturday. His fitness is not where it should be, but he is very positive to get it up to scratch," commented Bayly, who also declared himself satisfied with the performance of new Bulls signing, wing Wylie Human.

"He played well. He has great feet and although he didn't get many opportunities, he looked good when he had the ball. Even with limited space he always managed to beat a defender or two."

JP Nel, who was a sensation for the Blue Bulls before he got injured in his first Super 12 game for the Bulls, will start at inside centre against the Renegades.

Blue Bulls: Johan Roets, McNeil Hendricks, Frikkie Welsh, JP Nel, Wylie Human, Boeta Wessels, Coenraad Groenewald, Anton Leonard, Chris le Roux, Danie Rossouw, Victor Matfield, Matt Frank, Piet Boer, James Dalton, Wessel Roux. Substitutes: Rest of squad.
