SRU hears Borders club location plans
March 21, 2002

The Scottish Rugby Union executive will today hear the recommendation of their sub-committee regarding the location of the new professional Border team.

The Herald reports that only Hawick and Gala remain in the running and while even Hawick supporters admit that Gala remain favourites, there are elements of the Hawick bid that may prove attractive.

Gala's proposal is for a four-stage development with a multi-purpose sports centre based around their Netherdale home, incorporating facilities provided by Heriot-Watt University and Gala Fairydean football club. The total cost of the package is estimated to be £8m.

Hawick claim that they already have many facilities in place, not least their current stand, which can seat 1400 spectators. The total cost of their two-phase plan is less than £2m.

Hawick have also suggested that they have a greater rugby tradition than Gala.

The SRU could also opt for a joint home for the new team in the initial stages but work will need to commence immediately on the playing surface. In their current state, neither pitch would be capable of sustaining a full season of both professional rugby and local club fixtures.
