Bulls' chairman embarrassed by side

Chairman of the Bulls board Fanie Vermaak on Friday expressed his dissatisfaction with the team's appalling performance in the Super 12 by saying they have become an embarrassment.

The Bulls suffered their eighth defeat on the trot on Friday when the Blues humiliated them 65-24 in Auckland. Vermaak told Beeld from Auckland there was no longer denying the truth.

"The Bulls are simply not good enough for Super 12 rugby. On Friday they were completely without any plan or direction at times. They were dominated in every facet of the game by an opponent that does not even fire on all cylinders.

"The Bulls are being humiliated week after week and it does not matter how difficult it is to say so, I cannot but say they have become an embarrassment. I'm deeply disappointed."

Earlier this week Rautie Rautenbach, chairperson of the Falcons, slammed Bulls coach Heyneke Meyer, saying he should take the blame for the failure of the regional team and accusing him of a bias towards Blue Bulls players.

Vermaak said that he did not yet discuss Rautenbach's statements with him, but found it regrettable that he chose to go public with them when the correct forum would have been a board meeting.

"Rautie let pass a golden opportunity to do so just recently when he excused himself from a Bulls board meeting where frank discussions were held with, among others Rian Oberholzer (the managing director of SA Rugby)," said Vermaak.

Vermaak added he would call an emergency meeting of the Bulls board upon his return from New Zealand where all interested parties would have a chance to speak their minds.

"The situation is critical. We will be forced to make some unpopular decisions if we are to save the region from going under," Vermaak said.
