Newport edge out Glasgow
May 3, 2002

Newport made certain of a place in next season's Heineken European Cup and preserved their slim Welsh-Scottish League title hopes in dramatic style with a 28-26 win over Glasgow at Hughenden on Friday night.

They looked destined to plunge to another defeat, only for unsung scrum-half Llyr Lane to emerge as the hero with the clinching try in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Glasgow had opened in stirring style with two Calvin Howarth penalties before the Black and Ambers began to string together some threatening raids.

Flanker Jason Forster was allowed plenty of time and space to scoop up the ball and surge into enemy territory.

He had support in abundance and centre Matt Mostyn was left with a stroll to the posts, presenting Shane Howarth with a simple conversion.

And again the Warriors were rocked by a sucker punch from the Welshmen.

Howarth was the creator with a half break before sending Mostyn in for another cruise to the line, Howarth again landing the kick.

Glasgow came back into the contest with their first try.

It was the Newport defence's turn to dither, allowing Calvin Howarth to wriggle over after a slick exchange of passes with Jonno Stuart.

But the joy of the home fans was quickly subdued as Howarth thumped over a penalty at the other end.

Interval replacement Tommy Hayes was quickly in the limelight, bagging his 1000th point for the club.

He clipped over the easy conversion after Rory Kerr took his short-range pass to burst through on the crash ball.

Hayes then followed up with a superbly-struck penalty to put Glasgow four points up and pave the way for a dramatic finale.

Substitute Jason Strange narrowed the gap with an angled penalty at the other end.

But the Warriors had their supporters roaring their delight as Reid galloped over after a loop featuring Hayes.

Strange struck again - and fourth-choice scrum-half Lane sealed the win.
