Rogers, Sailor in Wallabies
June 4, 2002

Mat Rogers and Wendell Sailor have completed meteoric rugby union rises with inclusion in a 23-man Wallaby squad to meet the New Zealand Maori in Perth on June 15.

Rogers and Sailor, who had strong games for Australia A against Canada last weekend, are joined by locks Nathan Sharpe (Queensland) and Daniel Vickerman (ACT) as the only uncapped players in the squad. Vickerman is a former South African Under-21 representative who moved to Australia three years ago.

Once the two run on, they will join the elite list of dual internationals who have played rugby league and rugby union for Australia. Both players were high profile signings from rugby league during the off-season.

In the only other significant change to the squad, Waratahs captain Matt Burke has replaced Reds captain Daniel Herbert as vice-captain, suggesting Herbert's position in the run-on side at outside-centre is under threat. Brumbies utility winger Andrew Walker also won a recall to the squad.

Sailor said next year's World Cup in Australia was his aim, and humbly admitted injured rivals had given him an early chance.

"I know I'm not home yet, I know Ben Tune's got to come back, Scott Staniforth ... you've got to work probably harder now than before because you're in the squad and there's going to be blokes competing week in week out," the Reds winger said.

"I just hope Eddie gives me the opportunity first on the right wing and I don't let that go."

Rogers said Wallaby selection was "all he had thought about" for the past few weeks and was now targeting a position in the First Test against Six Nations champion France on June 22 in Melbourne.

"It's been 12 months to the day that I actually signed with rugby so to be announced in the Wallaby squad today is just fantastic," the former Sharks winger said.

"It's great to be in the squad and it's funny because I was always saying, `I hope I'm in the squad, I hope I'm in the squad', and now I'm in the squad I just want to be in the team."

Jones said he would continue experimenting with Rogers, who has played fullback with NSW and inside-centre and five-eighth with Australia A, to find out where the talented ball-runner was best suited.

George Gregan will captain the side, while five-eighth Stephen Larkham, winger Ben Tune and inside-centre Steve Kefu, were unavailable due to injury. All three are expected to be considered for selection for the Test series against France.

Wallaby coach Eddie Jones said last November's Test defeat to France in Marseille had sounded a wake-up call.

"The French are, of course, always inventive, but they showed us in
Marseille last year how to play a physical, mobile game," Jones said. " We have to go back to basics. The forwards are there to win the ball and the backs to use it."
