June 9, 2002

The Pacific Grizzlies have become the USA Rugby Men's Collegiate All-Star champions with a 41-29 victory over the Academies in San Jose, California.

Pacific took early control of the match. Just two minutes in, the Grizzlies snatched a loose ball and BYU player Ned Sterns scored off a four-phase play. The conversion was missed, giving Pacific a 5-0 lead. Then, in the 12th minute, the Academies team made its move when Mike Sahag, of the Naval Academy, slotted a penalty kick to make it 5-3. Pacific quickly answered though, as Sterns again produced and gave Pacific its second early try. The conversion was again missed, 10-3.

At the 18th minute, the Academies team had an opportunity to add three more points from a Pacific penalty, but the kick went wide. Yet, Pacific was able to benefit from an Academy penalty shortly after, 13-3.

Just 10 minutes later, Trevor Tausend from the University of California - Berkeley, pushed over for a try. This time David Guest, also from UC-Berkeley, slotted the conversion to widen the lead to 20-3.

Not wanting the gap to increase, the Academies began to mount a comeback. Just five minutes after Tausend's dominating try, Sahag converted his own try, 20-10. Academies teammate Wade Dahlgren added to his efforts scoring another quick try just seconds later and at the half the score was 20-17.

From the start of the second period Pacific came out tough. During the first five minutes, Pacific capitalized on Academies mistakes, scoring a try and two penalty kicks to move further ahead 31-17.

Once again, the Academies team hit back. Pacific was struggling and Academies found them on their heels, providing the chance for both Josh Dean and Ryan Thornton to score tries. Sahag only converted the first however, bringing the score to 31-29.

At the 27-minute mark, the Pacific's Guest capitalized on an Academy penalty and placed an easy kick, 34-29

Guest's kick weighed heavily on the Academies, as the team then had trouble re-grouping. Soon after, Pacific's Todd Clever, also a member of the USA U-19 Boys' National team, scored the final try at 31 minutes. Pacific took home the 41-29 win.

In other All-Star tournament play, the Mid-Atlantic beat the Northeast 31-12; the Midwest dominated Southern California 31-3; and the West pulled out a 36-27 victory over the South. The tournament's Most Valuable Player was awarded to Tom Dolan of the Southern California Territory.
