Reds sack McBain
June 10, 2002

Mark McBain's reign as Queensland coach has come to an end after only two years after the Queensland Rugby Union decided against renewing his contract.

McBain led the Reds to the Super 12 semi-finals in his first year in charge while the team just missed the final four again this year when the team finished fifth.

QRU chief executive Jeff Miller said the board would be seeking an alternative to guide the Reds and take the team to the next level next season.

The decision was made after McBain made his second presentation to the board about his plans for the future of the Reds on Monday.

Miller paid tribute to McBain for building a harmonious team and a solid foundation for future seasons but said it was time for a new leader.

"The Reds are going through a period of change with the retirements of a number of players and that makes it vital we have the right person to take the team forward," Miller said.

Miller did not identify any candidates for the coaching job.

McBain could not immediately be contacted for comment.
