Straeuli leaves door open for Monty
June 10, 2002

Springbok coach Rudolf Straeuli has declared he has not closed the door on Percy Montgomery or any of the South African players playing overseas.

Montgomery, who recently signed a two year deal with Welsh club Newport, was a spectator at Monday's Springbok training session.

When coach Straeuli was asked whether he would consider Montgomery for selection if he made himself available for the Springboks again he insisted the ball was in the former Stormers' man's court.

"If Percy wants to play for South Africa, if he decides to come back, the door is open. It's an easy choice in life. I spoke to him a few weeks ago, but not since.

"Do you think I've got to phone him?" Straeuli questioned further on the subject. He also insisted the same went for any players plying their trade overseas.

"Obviously, if any player wants to play for South Africa, not just for a week or two weeks and he is prepared to do it under SA Rugby terms, we'll have to consider him. So any player, like Braam van Straaten, if he wants to come back to South Africa, is welcome. We're not closing the door on anyone."

SA Rugby (Pty) Ltd has stated on numerous occasions that no player would be considered for the Springboks if he doesn't play in Super 12 or domestic competitions.
